Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 2, 2026
This Privacy Policy is published by Sandra Van Scotter for Congress (the "Campaign"), a federal political committee registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC ID C00922666). It explains what information we collect from people who visit electsandravanscotter.com, sign up, volunteer, or donate, how we use it, and the choices you have.
This policy covers information collected through this website and through the sign-up forms, email, and text message programs that this website connects you to. Our other campaign domains, sandra4cd20.com and sandravanscotterforcongress.com, redirect here and are covered by this same policy. It does not cover information you give directly to third-party platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, or X; those platforms have their own privacy policies.
By using this website, signing up, volunteering, or donating, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the site or submit information to us.
Information We Collect
Information you give us. When you sign up for updates, volunteer, RSVP to an event, sign a petition, send us a message, or donate, we collect what you enter: your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, and anything else you choose to tell us. If you donate, federal law also requires us to ask for your occupation and employer.
Payment information. Donations are processed by ActBlue, not by us. Your credit card number goes to ActBlue and is governed by ActBlue's privacy policy. We receive your name, contact information, occupation, employer, and the amount and date of your contribution so that we can thank you and meet our reporting obligations. We do not store full card numbers.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, ours records technical information when you visit: your IP address, browser type, device type, the pages you view, the time you visited, and the site that referred you. This is collected through cookies and similar tools described in the Cookies section below.
Information from other sources. We may combine what you give us with publicly available voter registration data, which California makes available to candidates for campaign purposes. We may also receive information from people who refer you to us, such as a friend who signs you up for an event.
How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
-
Send you campaign news, event invitations, volunteer opportunities, voting reminders, and fundraising requests
-
Respond to your messages and requests
-
Process donations, send receipts, and keep the records federal law requires
-
Contact you if election law requires us to request additional information, such as a missing occupation or employer for a contribution
-
Help you register to vote, find your polling place, and learn about campaign events near you
-
Understand how people use our website so we can improve it
-
Protect the Campaign, our volunteers, and the public from fraud, abuse, or security threats
We do not sell your personal information. We do not rent, trade, or exchange our supporter list with other candidates, committees, or organizations.
Public Disclosure of Contributions Required by Federal Law
Federal law requires the Campaign to use its best efforts to collect and publicly report the name, mailing address, occupation, and employer of every individual whose contributions total more than $200 in an election cycle. These reports are filed with the Federal Election Commission and are available to anyone at fec.gov. Contributions of $200 or less are reported in aggregate without your name, but we still keep a record of them as the law requires.
Federal law prohibits anyone from using information copied from FEC reports to solicit contributions or for commercial purposes. The Campaign follows this rule and does not use other committees' reported contributor data for fundraising.
Text Messages
We send text messages only to people who have opted in. By providing your mobile number and checking the opt-in box, you agree to receive recurring text messages from Sandra Van Scotter for Congress about campaign information, voting reminders, volunteer communications, and fundraising requests. Message frequency is up to one message per week. Message and data rates may apply. Consent to receive text messages is not a condition of donating or volunteering.
You can opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message. Reply HELP for help, or contact us at teamsandra@electsandravanscotter.com. We send texts through Twilio and through ActBlue; your mobile number is shared with those providers only to deliver the messages you have agreed to receive. We do not share your mobile number or your text-message consent with any other party for their own marketing purposes.
If you give us your email address, we will send you campaign updates, event invitations, volunteer requests, and fundraising appeals. Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and we honor opt-out requests promptly as required by the federal CAN-SPAM Act. We send email through Mailchimp.
How We Share Information
We share personal information only in the following situations.
Service providers who work on our behalf. We use outside companies to run this website, process donations, send email and text messages, and manage our voter and supporter data. They receive only the information they need to do that work and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
Our current providers are:
-
Wix: Hosts this website and its forms. [Wix privacy policy]
-
ActBlue: Processes donations and sends some text messages. [ActBlue privacy policy]
-
Mailchimp: Sends our email. [Mailchimp privacy policy]
-
Twilio: Sends our text messages. [Twilio privacy policy]
-
Geoinovo (GeoCanvasser): Canvassing app our volunteers use for do-to-door and voter contact. [GeoCanvasser privacy policy]
Campaign volunteers and staff. People who volunteer for the Campaign may see supporter information so they can make calls, knock doors, and organize events. They are instructed to use it only for Campaign purposes.
As required by law. We report contributions to the Federal Election Commission as described above. We may also disclose information when we believe in good faith that the law requires it, such as in response to a subpoena, court order, or other lawful request, or when disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of the Campaign, our supporters, or the public.
With your direction. If you ask us to pass your information to someone, for example to connect you with a local volunteer group, we will do so.
We may share information that has been aggregated or stripped of identifying details, such as how many people from each county signed up, and that information cannot reasonably be used to identify you.
We do not sell personal information. We do not share, rent, or trade our supporter list with other candidates, political committees, parties, or organizations.
Cookies, Analytics, and Do Not Track
Cookies. This website uses cookies, which are small files stored on your device, to keep the site working, remember your preferences, and understand how visitors use the site. Most browsers accept cookies by default. You can set your browser to refuse cookies or to alert you when one is being sent, though some features of the site may not work if you do.
Third-party collection. Our website host, Wix, provides the analytics we use to understand site traffic. We have not added Google Analytics, a Meta Pixel, or other third-party tracking tools to this website. Wix may collect information about your visits to this website and to other Wix-hosted websites over time, using cookies and similar technologies, and may share that information with its own analytics and advertising partners. The Campaign does not control Wix's collection practices. Wix's use of your information is governed by its privacy policy, linked in the vendor table above.
Do Not Track. Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" setting that signals websites you do not want your online activity tracked. There is no common standard for how websites should respond to these signals, and this website does not currently respond to them. You can limit tracking through your browser's cookie settings and through the opt-out tools that analytics and advertising providers offer.
Your Choices
Email. Click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any campaign email, or contact us at the address below. We process opt-out requests within 24 hours.
Text messages. Reply STOP to any message. Opt-outs sent by text take effect immediately; opt-out requests sent to us by email or phone are processed within 24 hours.
Access, correction, and deletion. You may ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email teamsandra@electsandravanscotter.com with "Privacy request" in the subject line and tell us what you would like us to do. We will respond within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request. We cannot delete contribution records that federal law requires us to keep, and we cannot remove information that has already been filed in public FEC reports.
Cookies. Adjust your browser settings as described in the Cookies section above.
Children
This website is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. Federal law also prohibits contributions from foreign nationals, and minors may contribute only under the conditions set by federal law. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information from loss, theft, misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. Donation pages use encrypted connections, and card numbers are handled by our payment processor rather than stored by us. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
How Long We Keep Information
We keep supporter information for as long as the Campaign is active and for as long as federal law requires us to keep records. Contribution records are retained for at least three years after the report in which they appear is filed. After the election, supporter information stays with the Campaign. It will not be sold, shared, or transferred to any other candidate, committee, party, or organization.
